So, you're headed out to watch the eclipse? Smart move! - a total eclipse is the coolest thing you're
likely to ever see in your whole life!
Make sure you are IN THE PATH!
(Our eclipse2017.org app will help with that!)
If this is your first eclipse, then you will of course want to know where to go to
watch it, as well as to get an idea of what you will see.
You will also want to be prepared with eye protection - for the partial phases!
After you get this info, though, you will want to make sure you have everything ready to go for Eclipse
Day! Here is a short list:
Get the app!
WIth the eclipse2017.org app, you'll have the simplest method possible to ensure you are in the path, AND to tell you when the eclipse will happen!
Sunscreen
You're going to be out in the sun all day, right? SPF 90 is what we use!
White Towels
These are to cover up all your equipment - to protect it from the sun while its sitting there for hours.
Hat
To protect your head from the sun.
Small tables / chairs
You can never have enough things to set up your equipment on - or to rest up a bit from all the excitement!
Extra batteries
Make sure you've charged up enough batteries for
everything have that takes them.
Cell phone charger (solar?)
just to make sure you can get the latest weather, the latest updates from our Twitter feed, and the most out
of our eclipse2017 app!
Blanket
No matter what you've set up on - grass, sand, or dirt - a blanket will keep things cleaner for you.
Sunglasses
NOT to look at the sun with! But to do what sunglasses normally do - namely, cut down glare when
you're looking at everything else.
Duct Tape
Because let's face it - when DON'T you need duct tape?
Eclipse Viewing Glasses
You MUST have these to watch the
partial phases of the eclipse. We have them for sale right now, VERY inexpensive! They will be
available everywhere, but you should get yours NOW - before the rush. Do not pay too much...
Electrical Tape
To cover up the flash on anyone's point-and-shoot camera that you might come across. Don't trust that they
"know how to" turn it off...
Water
You must stay hydrated. I about passed out in the 105-degree heat of the Turkish desert in 1999. Don't let that happen to you!
Eye patch
Some people like to dark-adapt one eye. They say it helps them distinguish fine detail in the corona
better during totality. We say, if it's your first eclipse - forget it!
If you have prepared any type of routine for photography or videos, please make sure you've planned
it and practised many times. Lots of things happen during totality that will make you forget
everything you've planned - so practice! And change all your batteries about 10 minutes before C2;
then, you shouldn't have any problems!
Here are some things NOT
to bring:
DO NOT BRING Your pets
(Or your kids, if they tend to act like pets!)
DO NOT BRING a white flashlight
Red is most likely OK, but you should not be looking anywhere during totality except at the sun!
DO NOT BRING Homemade solar filters
Nothing you make yourself will be OK - you must have solar
viewing glasses (or other approved SOLAR FILTER) that states "SAFE FOR DIRECT SOLAR VIEWING"!
